It’s in my blood. This picture tells the story – my cousin, Aaron, on the left; my Grandma, Connie, center; and me. Grandma loves to tell us about how her dad – our great-grandfather – officiated basketball. Check out this article she dug up for us. I love what he says at the end of the article.
It is the overzealous official that gets into trouble.
Aaron’s dad – my Uncle Paul – officiated basketball for a number of years during the ’80s and early ’90s. I remember him calling me up on Thursday evenings saying, “Hey Bryan, I’m reffing in Grand Rapids tomorrow night. You wanna go?” The year he was selected to ref one of the Michigan high school boys basketball finals, he invited me along. What I remember most about that experience was thinking, “Someday, I’m going to do this too! I’m going to ref the state finals.” Though that day hasn’t yet come, I’m trying to work my way up. That dream and desire hasn’t gone away.
